Would You Like To Live Up To 100 Years Old?

Would you like to live up to 100 years old?

by

rodolphe cote

Would it be fun to become a Centenarian?

The day of my 100 year old anniversary, I probably will run out of wishes for my future which will be, as we would, say not too promising. But I’ll have to get used the idea. There are over 1000 Centenarian in the province of Quebec alone. In twenty years, this lucky clicks could triple! Especially… If all the boomers start to diet, practice yoga and take Viagra, this number may still increase. Diets, yoga and Viagra are the kind of stuff that tend to keep us living longer.

But ageing! Just to think about ageing gives me goose pimples.. What if you woke up one good morning looking 30 years older with wrinkles suddenly tattooed all over your face, you would move away from your mirror screening and go back to sleep as fast as possible… maybe fore ever!

It reminds me of the curious story of a handsome actor, in his early thirties. One day his wife leaves him, which left him demolished. And like all men whose hearts are broken, he ends up doing something stupid: he shaves his head! Months later, it regrew, but this time his hair were not brown, but white! He was in shock and thought he was having an hallucination! For his agent his cast as an actor had changed radically: he had aged.

Thank goodness, like good wine, we usually age slowly and smoothly. Each day we crosses is leaving traced on our body, initially invisible and indelibly. Every smile adds a little more wrinkles and every torment accentuates them. Each step we take leads us farther into our lives, from year to year and from decade to decade. Its the perfect machine. That’s life, always temporary, which carries us ineluctably towards our final destiny, death.

Older people are always saying to young people: enjoy your life, life goes fast! But young people occupied in gobbling existence, are not listening. Their beauty is so dazzling it can not be but eternal. Their strengths are so great that it cannot diminish. And yet, almost imperceptibly, everything is already starting to fall apart.

If life is gradually retaking the perfection it has given us, it does it at least with compassion. It gives us time to get used to these increasingly ungrateful reflections in our mirrors. And it protects us better and better against a society which has always been nourished with the blood of the youth.

As we age, everything would not be lost!

On the contrary. While blowing his 60 candles, a wise man told me (You know I used to love being strong and good looking. I never imagined I would one day become a 60 years old man! But oddly today, I would not go back in time. In this sense, life is well done, you’ll see.)

A comforting thought is, the (older) you live the longer you can stay (young). Watch people around their forties today, they do not look like the old grand fathers of yesterday. Many are on the top of their careers. They are relatively fit, they are realizing their dreams, they are making money. And are even spending several sleepless nights rocking an unexpected new born! They often say (Life just begins at 40)

Still, for a 20 to 40 year old, people of 60 represents the beginning of the end with their flabby upper arms, their wrinkles, their protruding bellies, their white hairs or bald heads. At 40 years, we find that the 60 years have a lot of millage in their carcasses… But no matter our age, we are always the young one or the old one to a certain somebody else.

But there is a justice: everyone regardless of age is getting older and they will all end up with as some say! the face they actually deserves. Not a big consolation for me when I see my own reflection in the mirror. (Mirror mirror on the wall who is the ugliest of them all? Flagrant answer from the mirror! You are! God help me if I live over 100!) Quebec is particularly ageing fast. Already, one Quebecker on seven is over 65 years. And the ageing of baby boomers is barely starting.

The province of Quebec will soon be predominantly habitat-ed by gray heads and old worn bodies. As we can not alter and improve the whole setting with Photo-shop, we should begin to love ourselves and find ourselves good looking as we are, with all our faults. Because firstly, we are still not robots and that secondly living up to 100 years, while we do not particularly love ourselves can be boring … for a long long time.

Review: The I Tetralogy

Author: Mathias B. Freese

Is it possible to write an historical fiction of the Holocaust that would not diminish its importance, but rather provide us with another route by which we approach it?

This is a question that first crossed my mind, when I started to read Matias B. Freese’s The i Tetralogy.

As Freese states, and I tend to agree, the Holocaust is the single most important human event in world history. “It created a lens through which we can understand ourselves culturally, anthropologically, and sociologically.”

However, if we express ourselves through fiction, can we truly grasp an inmate’s desire to survive? Can we fully understand the inmate’s statement, “Resistance is not survival-that is for civilian populations, who have all the clues and signals that they are still civilized. They can resist. Here, resistance is a sentence of death, a bereft wind that blows across the camp.”

Is it possible to comprehend through the voices of fictional characters what primordial instinct made these beasts so passionately anti-Semitic, as they rationalize their actions by arguing that how, when, and they kill, or not, cannot be understood by vermin.

After reading The i Tetralogy, I will admit that these and many more of my queries have been more than adequately addressed, as this book is a rarity-not only for its high caliber of writing, but for its painful questioning and insightful analysis of Nazi atrocities.

Many of the book’s themes have been explored elsewhere, however, Freese’s strength lies in mounting a very exhaustive and meticulous rendering into the psyches of all three of his fictional characters, no doubt in large part attributable to his skills as an analytically trained and insight-oriented psychotherapist.

Freese succinctly sums up the Tetralogy as being an inner dialogue about the most significant event in human history, as he sees it.

He succeeds in painting emotionally charged portraits of his three characters, which give the book real depth. We read about Conrad, the camp guard’s son, who struggles to come to terms with himself, after learning of his father’s appalling past; Gunther, the hideous camp guard who rationalizes with his dribble and psychobabble logic; the victim, who describes the Germans as creatures from hell, devising, cruel, and demonic tortures for the Jews.

Moreover, Freese’s incendiary voice gives his readers a perceptive grasp of the enormity of the crimes and the bestiality of the Nazi regime, although I must admit that many of the horrific scenes would probably be regarded as overkill, and from time to time, I was forced to take a breather.

Most of us have trouble understanding how humans could perpetuate the heinous crimes committed during the Holocaust. Were Hitler’s henchmen mad or inherently evil?

When you read the camp guard’s self-analysis, you immediately become aware that he does not admit to feeling shame or remorse. Au contraire, he is very proud of his monstrous crimes, as he explains, “the Jew is to be processed. It is an assembly line. Consider it an industry, not a back-alley mugging.”

What is most disturbing is that many of these sub-human creatures were able to blend into American society after the war, where they go unseen and unnoticed, as was the case of Gunther. Gunther fittingly sums it up when he asserts, “Good Americans are much like Good Germans: as long as I take care of my lawn, bag the cuttings neatly for garbage pickup, and replace the siding every decade or so and gladly hand out Halloween korn like Gabby Hayes, I’m one of the good guys.”

The i Tetralogy is more than just another story about the Holocaust. It is a stark haunting portrait of a nation gone mad, and a reminder of the horrors that we sometimes take for granted and wish to sweep under the carpet.

What To Look Out For When Hiring A Gym Instructor

By Chris Chew

It does not matter whether you are considering hiring a gym instructor to help you lose weight, gain muscles or simply to get you to become fit and healthy, there are basic fundamentals you should look out for in order to choose a good fitness personal trainer.

Nowadays, there are so many gym instructors offering their services and to choose a good one, you must roll up your pants and wade into the fitness industry to scour for one. This is because the personal training industry is unregulated in most countries and thus standards of each instructor can vary widely. So here is a guide for you to know what to look for when hiring a gym instructor.

So the first thing to do is to ask your potential trainers to each give you 3 references to check on their credibility and ability. Good trainers will have no hesitation in giving you references of their former or existing clients because they are confident that they will be highly recommended as they have done a good and professional job.

If a trainer refuses or hesitates to give you any references upon request, then he/she is either very new and thus without any track record or have done badly and are afraid of you calling their clients.

Next, ask to see their certification. This is because since the industry is unregulated, many so called personal trainers are not certified or have not been trained professionally. All they can do is to teach you out of their own experiences when working out in the gym and thus may not be knowledgeable in the science of personal training or nutritional aspects and may teach you the wrong things.

Furthermore, the trainer should also be certified in CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and first aid so that he/she can respond to any emergencies in the gym.

Fees for personal trainers vary widely and are usually based on the instructor’s qualification and experience. As a general guide, the better trainers will command higher fees although there are exceptions.

If a price is the only consideration you are looking at, then you may get bad instructors if you go for the lowest fee although this may not necessarily be the case.

The logic is simple, if the trainer is good, he/she will still have clients despite the higher fees. Conversely, when an instructor is asking for a lower fee, then he/she may not be a good trainer as he/she finds it difficult to get clients as this person do not have referrals from satisfied clients. So do check around.

Although you should not base your selection of an instructor by appearance, it is an indication of the trainer’s commitment. If professional trainers don’t even have the discipline themselves to keep their bodies in good shape, then how much commitment can they give you to keep yours in good shape?

Last but not least, you must feel comfortable with your selected instructor. This is because you will be working out with this person for months or even years. Since you will be spending so much time with this person, you need feel at ease with the trainer.

So when you are considering hiring a good professional gym instructor, then keep these points in mind and chances are that you will choose a good trainer to get you into shape happily.

Book Review: Textile League Baseball: South Carolina’s Mill Teams, 1880 1955

Book Review: Textile League Baseball: South Carolina’s Mill Teams, 1880-1955

by

Johnny Kicklighter

I accidently stumbled upon Thomas Perry’s book, “Textile League Baseball,” while conducting some research on a bit of hometown trivia. Oddly, in the 1950’s and 60’s you could hear the Chicago White Sox broadcasts in my hometown of Greenville, SC on radio station, WMRB-1490 AM. As I grew older I wondered why where Chicago games broadcast into the Deep South. My interest was rekindled in 2006 when an investor purchased and relocated the last house that Shoeless Joe Jackson lived in. Unbeknownst to me, Jackson’s house was located just two blocks from where I attended elementary school. His house was eventually moved to downtown and became the Shoeless Joe Jackson Museum. I pondered, was the Shoeless Joe Jackson’s legacy connected to the broadcasts? Were the broadcasts the result of a fan base that had developed around Shoeless Joe? A posting on Facebook speculated that the Brandon Mill baseball team (where Shoeless Joe Jackson played) might have adopted the Chicago White Sox as their team. I purchased Thomas Perry’s book in the hope he could shed some light on my quest.

Perry’s book intrigued me because I was born in Greenville. At one time, upstate South Carolina was considered the textile center of the world. I only lived two miles from Brandon Mill where my wife and her parents worked prior to its closure. Perry explained, not only was baseball a part of the textile community, but why textile mills sprang up where they did. He stated you frequently found a textile mill near a water source as running water was necessary to generate electricity. The mill was the heart of the community and its employees were not viewed just as workers, but as family. Textile mills were often located in remote areas lacking convenient access to entertainment and other amenities.

Thomas Perry states that baseball became a fundamental part of textile village life and was an outlet to the grueling work scheduled. The games fostered competition and community pride for players and spectators. Teams sprang up in every corner of the region and by 1908 the first league was born. As time wore on, teams and leagues would form and fold, but the interest never waned. Spectators would travel for miles by foot, horse drawn buggy, or train just to watch Textile Baseball. The Textile League baseball glory years were the 1930’s. Many believed their level of play was equal to Major League baseball and teams were not shy to send a prospective player packing if he wasn’t up to their standards. Mill owners recruited good players and sometimes would bend employment rules to the benefit of the team. Indeed, owners were investing capital and resources to make the teams competitive and attendance would frequently exceed a thousand per game.

Perry also identified the great players of the league with chapters devoted to Champ Osteen and Shoeless Joe Jackson. In addition, he offers an appendix of Textile League players who made it to the majors. Unfortunately, I could find not collaborating evidence of textile mills adopting Major League teams. This was an immediate source of disappointment. The very fact that Perry didn’t mention this is probably because the teams didn’t adopt. However, much to my delight, I did find the names of two baseball players: my former pastor, Dan Greer of Washington Avenue Baptist Church, and my father-in-law, John Blackston. Both were listed in the second appendix, “Records and Rosters.”

Perry cites several reasons for the demise of the Textile Leagues in the chapter titled the Decline and Fall: mill owners began to sell houses in the mill villages destroying community pride; post WW II prosperity meant more folks bought automobiles making a trip to the lake, mountains, etc. more preferable than a walk to the ball field; television; mill management allocated less money as teams lost money due to less attendance; disparity among the teams, as larger mills could field better ball players; and the final death nail occurred in 1959 when South Carolina applied an Admission Tax to the gate receipts.

Reading the chapter Decline and Fall left me feeling profoundly sad. I’m not sure why except that it reminded me of each time I visit Greenville. As I travel through the city, I notice all the abandoned mills with their rusting water towers appearing as headstones marking a bygone era. I certainly don’t relish the times when the Ready River would change colors when mills would dump their waste. But I do reminisce about the hustle and bustle of the mill activity and the community spirit that once thrived.

Even though the book didn’t help me collaborate a Chicago White Sox radio broadcast and Shoeless Joe Jackson connection, it was a thoroughly enjoyable read. (I eventually confirmed that Shoeless Joe had nothing to do with the Sox broadcasts. It turned out to be just an odd coincidence.) The book did have one distraction however. I was annoyed at the statistical and performance details the author would include in his attempt to highlight some of the more memorable or significant games. I suppose box score numbers are helpful in some circumstances, but I found them distracting. Descriptions are entertaining in the sports pages but make for dull reading in a history book. Nevertheless, in one instance those details come in handy when an associate told me of a relative who played for Easley. A quick check of the book found the player, Wayne Johnson of the Brooklyn Dodgers, on page 72 facing Lou Brissie from Monaghan who was owned by the Philadelphia Athletics. So I suppose I should repent of my egotistical view and be thankful for that added detail.

If you love baseball and are a student of sport history or folklore, Thomas Perry’s book belongs on your bookshelf.

Designing A Fitness Nutrition Plan That Is Just Right For You With A Danville Bootcamp

By Adaleya Johnson

The link between fitness and nutrition is more than obvious. Exercise and a good diet plan need to go hand in hand for the success of your slimming and body shaping efforts. The problem stems from the fact that many people misunderstand fitness nutrition or they rely on the common urban myths, says a Danville bootcamp trainer.

The following tips and ideas will help you create a fitness nutrition plan that is just right for you. Each person has specific nutritional, weight loss and workout needs, which indicates that it will be impossible to come up with a single plan that will suit everyone. This is where a Danville bootcamp trainer can come in handy.

Calculate Your Calorie Needs

The first step towards proper fitness nutrition involves a calorie needs calculation. Many such calculators are available for free online.

This calculation will help you determine the number of calories that your body needs to maintain the current weight. Decreasing these calories will obviously allow you to lose weight. Completing the test will give you an estimate that you can base your nutritional plan upon.

The calorie needs calculator takes in consideration your age, gender, current weight and level of daily activities. Your information will be utilized to estimate the number of maintenance, fat loss and extreme fat loss calories.

Carbohydrates are Good

One of the very popular urban myths states that carbohydrates are bad and lead to weight gain. People can choose among numerous low-carb or no-carb diets that are expected to produce miraculous results.

But according to a Danville bootcamp trainer, carbohydrates are essential for people that are working out. In fact, a pre-workout meal should be rich in carbohydrates. They provide quick and instantly utilizable energy. Thus, consuming carbohydrates before exercising will help you last longer and maximize the results of your routine.

It is important to choose the right carbohydrates. Avoid processed and fast foods. These have little nutritional value. Go for natural products like fresh fruits, vegetables, raw nuts and wholegrain products.

The Importance of Proper Hydration

Surprisingly, many people have improper hydration habits. Drinking insufficient amounts of water will affect both your body transformation efforts and your overall health.

Water plays an important role in all metabolic processes. This is a clear indication that large amounts of water are needed by people who are looking forward to weight loss and a slimmer figure. Sufficient water intake is a very important prerequisite for successful exercise because you will be sweating a lot during a workout.

Most fitness experts recommend the regular intake of water throughout the day. You should also try to have at least two glasses of water before a workout session. Sip on water throughout your exercise session as well.

The Bad Fat?

Fat is probably as infamous as carbohydrates. Many people think that lipids signify automatic weight gain. What most individuals fail understanding is that there are different types of fat and some of these are essential for health.

Hydrogenated and saturated fats should be avoided. These usually have an animal origin or they are found in margarine. Choose healthy fats like olive oil and flax seed oil; these are two very healthy options that will play an important role in your fitness nutrition plan.

Proper fitness nutrition involves lots of awareness and understanding of the building blocks of food. Some careful calculations and getting in the routine of choosing healthy foods will soon help you enjoy better health and maximum workout results, especially with a Danville bootcamp. Once you get used to the new rules, you will enjoy both your food and the weight loss benefits it will produce.

Obtain Cell Phone Records And Detailed Billing Records

By Ed Opperman

Until very recently if you suspected your spouse or lover was cheating one way to spy on them would be to go online or hire a private investigator and purchase copies of their cell phone bills. That way you could get a complete listing of all the incoming and out going calls from their cell phone. It was a great tool for investigators and a very useful resource for victims of infidelity to make an informed decision about their relationships. No one likes to be in the dark about infidelity.

Like all things that can be used for good it was open to abuse. For instance the blogsters at AMERICAblog was able to obtain General Wesley Clark’s cell phone records for $89.95.

Now unless you are Mrs Wesley Clark this is an obvious abuse of an investigative tool. Terrorists could have purchased those cell phone records and used the information illegally and put the General, his family and even the nation at risk.

Sen. Chuck Schumer, a New York Democrat proposed legislation H.R. 4709: Law Enforcement and Phone Privacy Protection Act of 2006, and S. 2178: Consumer Telephone Records Protection Act of 2006, both passed committee. so it is longer possible to legally purchase such information. So now it is illegal to obtain these records unless you are the actual owner of the phone and you can prove it.

well this should protect us from identity thieves and terrorists but what about the run of the mill soccer mom that suspects her man is out doing her wrong? what can she do?

Well there are still some ways to obtain info from cell phones that are perfectly legal.

One is a Digital Forensics.

if you are the legal owner of the phone you can hire investigators like EmailRevealer.com and have the phone examined forensically. Most people don’t realize it but deleted text messages, deleted Caller ID records and deleted address book entries can all be retrieved from a cell phones or Blackberry and many other hand held electronic devices.

Or you can give your spouse a gist of a phone with GPS installed and track their every move. AccuTracking – Starter Kit –

It’s also possible and perfectly legal to do an online search of thousands of personal ads to see if your lover’s email address is being used for online cheating. Dating Service (infidelity) Assessment

So like all things Internet the technology moves faster than lawmakers. As long as investigators are responsible and are not making these tools available to potential terrorists and limiting them to legitimate investigations we can be safe from terrorist, Identity Theft and Infidelity all at the same time.

If you decide to hire a professional investigator to perform a forensic examination on a cell phone be sure the person or company you hire is recognized as an expert in the field. run a Google search to see if they are recognized as experts in hand held digital forensics and computer hard drive examinations.
